What is GIS?
Geographic Information System (GIS) is defined as an
information system that is used to input, store, retrieve,
manipulate, analyze and output geographically referenced
data or geospatial data, in order to support decision
making for planning and management of land use, natural
resources, environment, transportation, urban facilities,
and other administrative records.
Local governments use GIS to manage maps of states and
counties, for taxation purposes, census, and for providing
EMS and 911 services. Private companies use GIS to track
the location of delivery vehicles and for facility management.
Individual consumers use GIS in the form of computerized
mapping devices which are now appearing in many luxury
vehicles and mobile telephones.
